Researcher

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to gain insight about your thought process and your approach to planning and conducting user research.

Timeline

Out of respect for your time, we ask that you take no more than two hours to complete this assignment. Please submit at least one day before your second interview.

Your task

The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration wants to improve digital services for people who want to get their first driver’s license in Maryland. Your homework is to develop a brief recruitment plan and moderator’s guide that you will use to facilitate a user research session in order to understand the needs of this population and how well the existing website is addressing those needs. During the second interview, you will facilitate a mini (15-20 minute) session with a mock participant based on part of your guide.

Note: We’ve selected this prompt because it is similar to the type of work we do – however, we don’t currently work with this agency, and are not asking you to do free work for us or our customers.

Instructions

1-2 page high level project/recruitment plan for a 2-4 week project

  • This should include the broad questions your project is trying to answer and how you plan to go about getting those answers (methods and process), we are not looking for specific logistics
  • Frame this as if these are involved stakeholders you’ve worked with before, and who have some familiarity with UX research

1-2 page draft conversation guide

  • This should include questions/areas of exploration you’d use in qualitative interviews
  • We’ll ask you to facilitate a portion of your conversation guide for 15-20 minutes of the interview with a pretend participant

Guidance

Focus on the content – you will be discussing this with your interviewers, not showing a polished or final presentation.
